The Third Shift: Managing Hard Choices in Our Careers, Homes, and Lives as Women
Michele Kremen Bolton Manufacturer: Jossey-Bass ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 0787948543 |
Book Description
Today's women work not one but three shifts: the first from nine to five, the second at home, and the third in their minds as they review the decisions and actions of the day. While the first and second shifts may be physically exhausting, the third shift can be psychologically rending because many women use it to second-guess their motives, doubt their choices, and question their trade-offs. Michele Bolton shows women how to turn the third shift into a source of self-awareness and self-confidence instead. Drawing from a three-year study of women in Silicon Valley and her own experiences as a working mother, Bolton explores the three most important dilemmas all women face, whether they're corporate executives, entrepreneurs, or full-time moms. She then presents women with a practical plan for facing these dilemmas, making the hard choices, and embracing their decisions.Customer Reviews:
The Third Shift: Create Maximum Power for Self-Actualization.......2001-01-06
The Identity Challenge: Who Are We?
The Task Challenge: What Do We Do?
The Balance Challenge: Who Comes First?
Bolton draws upon a wealth of research (hers and others') which guides and informs her observations, recommendations, and conclusions. In the Afterword, she suggests that "In many ways, women today live in a surreal world, floating back and forth between an outdated cultural mirror that prescribes certain genderized roles, and then careening suddenly toward the possibility of an entirely new image, with as-yet-unknown life scripts and patterns for its many actors and actresses." Although written for women, this book should also be be read by men who also have "hard choices" to make. If they make the correct choices, perhaps many of the decisions made by women will be less difficult.

Excellent read for all women in and out of the workplace.......2000-07-22
I have very rarely read a non-fiction book that I wanted to keep reading as if it was a good novel. It is written in a great style and uses a "self awareness" versus "self-doubt" analogy in each chapter with which I claimed total identification. I am recommending this book to all my friends. Many men could also benefit from reading this book too.

Collaborative Business Ecosystems and Virtual Enterprises (IFIP INTERNATIONAL FEDERATION FOR INFORMATION PROCESSING Volume 213) (IFIP International Federation for Information Processing)
Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 1402070209 |
Book Description
New collaboration mechanisms and organizational forms supported by networking tools not only induce new business domains but "invade" all traditional sectors and organizations, which requires thinking of each business as part of a wider economic ecosystem and environment.
The virtual enterprise / virtual organization developments, although initially technology-driven, are gathering more and more contributions of a multi-disciplinary nature, namely from the socio-economic and organizational areas. New behavioral forms, new cooperation agreements and social contracts, new liability agreements and risk negotiation practices, new ways of generating value for common developments, and correspondingly new challenges on intellectual property and ownership identification are among the major trends.
This book contains selected articles from PRO-VE'02, the third working conference on Infrastructures for Virtual Enterprises, which was sponsored by the International Federation for Information Processing (IFIP) and held in Sesimbra, Portugal in May 2002. The included articles represent relevant examples of the current state of the art in virtual enterprises and other collaborative and networked organizations, and provide valuable insights on future trends and challenges. The book contents clearly reflect a growing maturation and diversification of the area. Important development directions are well represented, such as: modeling and reference architectures, formation of virtual organizations, including contract management and negotiation, operation support functionalities, infrastructures and interoperability, virtual communities and new collaboration forms, best practices and strategic planning, economic aspects and performance metrics, training and new ways of working.
Collaborative Business Ecosystems and Virtual Enterprises is essential reading for researchers, engineers, managers, practitioners, sociologists, and students in production engineering, computer science, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, organizational science, and industrial sociology.

Book Description
From Timex to Rolex and from Levi's to Liz Clairborne, brand names conjure up definite images in the minds of most Americans. While brand loyalty may be going the way of the Edsel, the importance of product brands can't be easily dismissed.
The 3-vol. Encyclopedia of Consumer Brands is the first reference of its kind to compile the origin, evolution and current market status of some of the world's most recognizable consumer brands. It's unrivaled comprehensive scope and generous article length make it a valuable reference for students, librarians, job seekers, advertising and business professionals and other researchers who want to learn about the historical and modern development of products that have impacted American culture.
Each volume of the Encyclopedia contains approximately 200 entries, written in case-study style, that highlight interesting details including how a product originated and was first marketed, how it developed commercially and how it fares today compared with its competitors and its own past history. Peppered throughout are fun facts and amusing anecdotes pertaining to the famous -- or infamous -- marketing strategies and advertising campaigns that managed to capture the sometimes jaded viewers' attention.
Special features found throughout the Encyclopedia strengthen its usefulness. Look for helpful at-a-glance data boxes offering vital statistics including market share, major competitors, advertising agencies, parent company, address, phone and fax numbers. Change Your Course, It's Time for E-biz
Janusz Szajna Manufacturer: Progress International ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0968482015 |
Book Description
You can find many books written for somebody and only a few written for you. "Change Your Course, It's Time for E-biz" is one of few."Change Your Course..." is now available in English, Polish and Russian. Soon it will also be offered in Czech, French, German, Greek, Spanish, Korean.
"Change Your Course, It's Time For E-biz" is one of the best books written in recent times.
The author effectively Links the process of change to the everyday life of every person.
The reader participates in the whole process of change presented in the book, and begins to understand that he can transform from a passive observer and participant to an active co-creator and partner obtaining his rightful profits.
Because of the content, format, as well as literary language, the book finds many readers and is an excellent tool in many businesses connected with the Internet. One can dare to say that as a writer Janusz is unequalled in this subject.
In a very skilled way he shows readers that it is indeed time to change their way of thinking and begin to see and use the various changes affecting us. Szajna gives a series of examples of disregarded, overlooked and unobserved opportunities. He skilfully transforms himself into the reader who observes his own mistakes.
Two friends meet:
- Oh I feel like going to Paris again.
- You've already been there before?
- No, but I felt like going before.
At the same time, he points out that "time past does not have to be time lost", if the information, knowledge and experience from the past is used correctly.
The author teaches simple, but useful methods of analysing changes as well as predicting the outcomes. All along, the reader partakes in the process of evolution from a passive participant to an active initiator.
The writer presents a great number of examples and statistics from independent sources, showing the direction and dynamics of modern changes and the part we play in them.
The increase in the number of Internet web sites was as such:
1993............130
1995.........23,500
1997......1,044,163
1998......3,358,989
1999......7,078,194
2002.....72,000,000
The information given is not dry facts and data, but an illustration of occurrences that touch all people. Janusz Szajna brings to light the opportunities that every one of us has in the creation of the future. Page after page, the book leads to the conclusion that it is in fact "time to change the course" because "either we will use the new technologies, or they will use us".
- You know, thanks to the Internet I have saved on my water-bill.
- How?
- I took a virtual shower in one of the houses put up for sale on it.
The reader discovers, that as a consumer of different goods he "makes business even in his sleep". Unfortunately he does it for somebody else. Yet all one has to do is change their course, change their way of thinking and change from being a regular client to a co-operator.
The author brings to attention, that one should not fear any innovations and inventions, because it is not them making business, but people.
Two workers are chatting:
- I'm sure that a computer will never replace a human at work.
- How can you be so sure?
- Because a computer can't laugh at the boss's jokes.
This is why he recommends that his readers should look for and start a partnership with a company that besides great technical subsidiaries offers a proper plan for partnership, enabling the benefit of unlimited income, as well as a proper, top-quality system of motivation and education. Szajna emphasizes that the power which results from good human relationships is much more important than the best technical subsidiaries.
The book closes with a chapter titled If not now, then when?, in which the author reasons that the conditions right now are the best to involve oneself in the building of one's own business.
Humour, anecdotes and stories taken straight out of life greatly portray and conclude the topics discussed in the respective chapters.
A wife about her husband: - He's very stubborn. You can't imagine how hard it is for me to convince him that he's wrong when he's right.
- Daddy you wrote a pretty good book.
- Really?! What do you want?
- It\222s true! It\222s very hard to find any one like it.
- Why do you think that?
- Because in introducing very important and serious things you use very good language, understandable for everybody. All readers will enjoy it.
- Paulina, author\222s daughter, student of language at York University in Toronto
I hope you will enjoy this book. Thank YOU for your interest in \223Change Your Course, It\222s Time for E-biz\224.
- Editor
Now, still available is the first book written by Janusz Szajna \223Network Marketing \226 the Way of Life\224, printed in Czech, English, French, German, Polish, Romanian and Russian. Constructing the New Consumer Society
Manufacturer: Palgrave Macmillan ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0312159447 |
Book Description
This work argues that the coming of "a new consumerism" in the affluent societies marks a distinct phase of modernity. Limits of production no longer confine consumption to what is necessarty or instrumental. Demands for increasing production no longer shape ideology and culture as they did previously. Contemporary themes of morality, the body, citizenship and inequality are here placed in a new theoretical light. The book provides examples of new codes of happiness in consuming products, culture and entertainment. Issues of nutrition, consumer policy, environmental risk and health are discussed in the light of these new codes.

In the Hurricane's Eye: The Troubled Prospects of Multinational Enterprises
Raymond Vernon Manufacturer: Harvard University Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0674445821 |
Book Description
The world's multinational enterprises face a spell of rough weather, political economist Ray Vernon argues, not only from the host countries in which they have established their subsidiaries, but also from their home countries. Such enterprises--a few thousand in number, including Microsoft, Toyota, IBM, Siemens, Samsung, and others--now generate about half of the world's industrial output and half of the world's foreign trade; so any change in the relatively benign climate in which they have operated over the past decade will create serious tensions in international economic relations.
The warnings of such a change are already here. In the United States, interests such as labor are increasingly hostile to what they see as the costs and uncertainties of an open economy. In Europe, those who want to preserve the social safety net and those who feel that the net must be dismantled are increasingly at odds. In Japan, the talk of "hollowing out" takes on a new urgency as the country's "lifetime employment" practices are threatened and as public and private institutions are subjected to unaccustomed stress. The tendency of multinationals in different countries to find common cause in open markets, strong patents and trademarks, and international technical standards has been viewed as a loss of national sovereignty and a weakening of the nation-state system, producing hostile reactions in home countries.
The challenge for policy makers, Vernon argues, is to bridge the quite different regimes of the multinational enterprise and the nation-state. Both have a major role to play, and yet must make basic changes in their practices and policies to accommodate each other.
Customer Reviews:
The troubled prospects of multinational enterprises.......2000-04-04
Once their expansion was viewed with suspicion and hostility by many of their new host countries, but now multinationals are actively wooed throughout most of the world for their job-creating investments in local economies. However, within their own home countries (predominantly the advanced economies of the U.S., Europe, and Japan), the multinationals are increasingly a source of political tension. There is a fundamental conflict between the desire of the state to maximize the well-being of its own people and the desire of a multinational to optimize its global system regardless of the impact that might have within any individual country, including its own home country. The combination of global competition and aging populations has increased the demand for government sponsored social support in the most advanced economies, even as the same pressures encourage multinationals to move investments and jobs out of their high-cost home countries. Although globalization is not likely to be reversed, the multinationals may increasingly find themselves used as convenient scapegoats for the problems caused by this massive restructuring of the global economy. The recent WTO riots in Seattle may only be the beginning.

Free Trade and Uneven Development: The North American Apparel Industry After NAFTA
Manufacturer: Temple University Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 1566399688 |
Book Description
This volume addresses many of the complex issues raised by North American integration through the lens of one of the largest and most global industries in the region: textiles and apparel. In part, this is a story of winners and losers in the globalization process, especially if one focuses on jobs lost and jobs gained in different countries and communities within North America, defined here as: Canada, the United States, Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean. However, it would be a mistake to view the industry solely in these zerosum terms. The North American apparel industry is an excellent illustration of larger trends in the global economy, in which regional divisions of labor appear to be one of the most stable and effective responses to globalization. The contributors to this volume are an international and interdisciplinary group of scholars who have all done detailed fieldwork at the firm and factory levels in one or more countries of North America. Taken together the essays offer theoretical and methodological innovations built around the intersection of the global commodity chains and industrial districts literatures, as well as innovative approaches to studying the impact of cross-national, interfirm networks in terms of production and trade issues, and local development outcomes for workers and communities.
