I am currently in the start-up of a new casino. It is a new jurisdiction with a wealth of inexperience. The book plays a very practicle role in this setting and would probably be used best as a reference. The other side of the book serves as a basis for discussion among those people "in the know".

It is always nice in an opening to have someone walk around asking the right questions, making you think of the "small things". This book does just that(save for walking around).

I have not read all the chapters, but what I have read I would recommend.

    Forensic Linguistics is an introduction to the fascinating interface between language and the law. The second half of Forensic Linguistics is more socially applied.     This book analyses the specific demographic implications and conditioning factors of women's experience of poverty. By investigating the different experiences that women in developing countries face in attempting to escape from poverty, the contributors illustrate the importance of incorporating the gender perspective into population studies. Higher fertility levels and early nuptiality patterns among the poor are frequently attributed to socioeconomic reasons. The authors of this book demonstrate the importance of looking at other dimensions, such as the subordinate roles of women in their families of origin and the centrality of motherhood in women's lives. Some chapters also show how gender inequality in educational skills and cultural norms regarding motherhood, marital status, and the limiting of physical movement explain why poverty alleviation strategies such as market work and migration may have different results for men and women. Finally, other authors look into women's autonomy in household decisions as a factor that exerts a strong influence on their ability to obtain maternal and infant health care.

    Over a billion people in the world still live in absolute and near-absolute poverty, where the former is defined as a daily income of less than $US1. Of these, the book notes that women bear more than their share. If we wish to remedy the poverty, the authors suggest analysing how and why the women in it have experiences different from men.

    Several articles describe how girls often get less education than boys, which then constrains their future employment prospects. Related to this are results of how poorer women have less knowledge of contraception and less means to purchase them. One such article studied lower and upper class girls in Argentina. But the results certainly apply elsewhere. One consequence is higher fertility by the poor, who have less resources to cope. So the wheel turns on another cycle.

    The book is scholarly and dispassionate in reporting what must really seem at times to be ineradicable suffering. I leave it to you to decide if the remedies suggested in the book will have much impact. In part, it is the sheer scale of numbers that is so daunting. Maybe we can only hope for the best with these measures.

        I almost feel dumber for having read this book. I'm not saying that the author doesn't make some very valid points, he certainly does, but those points are common knowledge for those involved in sales. For every valid point he makes there is at least one ridiculous suggestion... Like this one: Stake out a prospect's business early in the morning or late evening to find out what kind of car he drives so you can stick a note on it asking him to call you??? Can you imagine what would become of your reputation if you got caught playing detective? Can we say "ethics"? The book is full of sneaky examples such as that one, so if that's what you're looking for, buy this book. If, however, you desire to become a professional and well regarded salesperson, you should probably skip this title.

        Another gripe: $15 for 72 pages? That seems a little steep to me. I'm not complaining, I should have noticed that before I bought it, but you might find $.50 per sheet of paper to be a little extravagant.

        This is a very good book. The principle behind the counting game was very clear to me, expect objections & be prepared to overcome them. From one review on here, it is clear that someone did not understand the authors thinking. I admit to only reading a couple of books on selling, though iv'e been in sales for almost 40 years and i love what i do. This book gets top marks from me, no blurb, just good ideas that i have tried with good success rates. For the price of a few coffee's, this was value for money.

        This book might have worked in the '50s when people were not as sophisticated or cynical as today. Playing a counting game to ask your prospects questions, then determining that question #17 (no matter what it is) is the question that will guarantee you close the sale, is so dumb that it's insulting to the reader's intelligence.

        This book is full of substandard techniques (mainly contrived distractions, white lies, raising the selling price just so the salesperson can call his manager and negotiate a lower price just for the prospect's benefit) that I wonder how the author actually got "successful" in his selling career. And the typos throughout the book!

        I own and have read close to 300 books on selling and marketing, as well as several dozen audio programs that I listen to in the car. I make a very good living at selling, and I enjoy the chance to hone my skills so I can actually provide solutions to my prospects, not just to get them to buy something. Being open to anything that will help me in my sales career, I'm constantly in search of books and materials to help me become a better salesperson. Normally I avoid books with insulting titles like "Keep It Simple, Stupid" since the book assumes that the reader is stupid or a dummy or an idiot. But with all the 5 star recommendations I thought I'd give it a try.

        Just goes to show that a person ought to trust their own instincts and not fall prey to manipulative techniques of getting you to buy books that talk down to your intelligence. Save yourself some money and read books like Brian Tracy, Zig Ziglar, Jim Rohn. These are the people you want to emulate in your quest for selling superiority.

        Door to door selling is a hard business to be in and this book just blows the lid off the industry. I could see why certain people would be offended if they read this book....THE TRUTH HURTS. This guy knows people and how to exploit human behaviour to his selling advantage. This is the most honest book i have ever seen on the subject of direct selling, but if your naive about real life direct selling, dont buy it. Me personally, iloved it and yes i use his tricks...they work and thats all that matters. The author specifically says "Do not lie/mislead/inflate what your product does, just to get a sale" and i dont..i do everything else he suggests to gain their confidence & sleep very well at night. Oh, & my sales have rocketed.

          I am a Professional Speaker and found this book to be a concise guide to building a business. Since reading the material, I have used some of the mailing ideas to great results. Also, I have now been interviewed on two talk radio programs. I owe this directly to Nanette Miner's material in the book. I strongly encourage you to read this book.

                                    The long and the short is that you WILL be seeing your interactions with customers in a different light after this read. It doesn't matter how long you have been selling, this will let you see what really makes your customer "tick", how to sense what their motivators are, and what will get them closer to the close.

                                    Kevin Hogan just writes the same old stuff that has been pushed in the self help categories for decades.
                                    There is nothing new, original or even interesting.
                                    The covers to his books always look so good so you get ready for a life changing experience only to be severly dissapointed, to discover you have read this some where else in an older book.
                                    See Dale Carnegie etc.
                                    I dont like the way he loves to tell the reader or make them believe what a nice man he is with stories of good deeds, such as giving a little girl in wheel chair a gift.Tasteless...
                                    You should not boast about your actions its like trying to convince some one you are really honest they end up thinking the opposite.

                                    Its about time some one wrote a 'selling your self book' with out the usual smile and be nice blah blah blah retoric.

                                    I have no idea what book the guy below me read. I've read four or five of Hogan's books now and this is one of the best.

                                    From the stories of his childhood to the tips he got from some of the all time greats, this book is filled with anecdotes, lots of research. And I mean a *lot* of research.

                                    I've never seen this much new stuff in a sales book...and I've been selling for over 10 years.

                                    I've read and reviewed a number of Kevin Hogan's books, this one is probably his best work (along with Irresistible Attraction). What sets this book aside from every other sales book I've read is the brilliant weaving of hypnotic stories with truly razors edge scientific advances in behavioral genetics.

                                    The authors of this book have the greatest respect for salespeople and go so far as to say, "Salespeople make the world go around. Without the salesperson, nothing happens...no one gets paid." Clearly Hogan and Horton are salespeople themselves. They tell their stories in a most elegant and unique fashion. More importantly, those of us who sell for a living, sense an understanding that is rarely experienced in books that beat "overcoming their objections," "scripts" and "close hard close often techniques."

                                    There is no question that what makes this book stand out are the three chapters about how to ask questions and present information based upon people's genetic bias. Hogan goes into great detail about sex and selling, the flight/fight response, the drive to eat, connect and acquire...and he details how you communicate so you push all the right instinctual buttons at the right nanosecond. I confess I had never considered these concepts...ever. I've been to see Tony Robbins, Brian Tracy, Tom Hopkins and Zig Ziglar numerous times. They are all incredible, but even they don't have this material...or if they do, they haven't presented it to my knowledge.

                                    More specifically Hogan breaks down the genetic biases of individuals into key drives and desires which he claims are not original to his thinking but collected from William James and Stephen Reiss. However, with the credited assistance of Hogan's colleague Richard Brodie, they ambitiousl detail utterly new ways to get inside of the mind of your customer and show exactly how to help that customer see your product in it's best possible light.

                                    Hogan's co-author Horton, contributes with NLP techniques, many of which we have seen and several we haven't. I took my NLP training in Chicago and now I wish I would have taken my training with Horton as his contributions are significant to this book. I'm not an afficianado of the martial arts but I felt his metaphors from his experience in the martial arts were useful in understanding the sales process.

                                    This book only has one weakness and that is that it reads unevenly at times. It sometimes feels as if you are reading a long article after another long article. However, this criticism is really to be taken in the context of its enormous contribution to the field of selling and really to every salesperson out there.

                                    Selling Yourself to Others is based on selling with integrity and yet offers you scientific insights into the human mind that make you feel like you can turn the keys at will. After you read this, you will probably get pangs of guilt for having so much power. Once you get over it, you have a manual that likely won't be matched for many years.

                                    There are also a number of truly funny stories that made me laught out loud. This is a serious book about how to sell but once per chapter you simply find yourself unable to control yourself with laughter. This is amazing stuff. Hogan's best work.

                                    Five stars.

                                      I was looking for a manual or book to help me in preparing a mail offer to the public power market. Mr. Gosden's prose were very readable and very helpful. The only shortcoming of this book, that I have used for over six years, is that it is sometimes too broad in scope for my application. In general, it is an excellent 'how-to' for beginners. As an after thought; the author's name is Freeman Gosden,Jr., not Gosden Freeman
