4 out of 5 stars An interesting book for readers with a BA in economics.......2005-12-26

Colander and his coauthors have provided an interesting inside view on a group of economists(some examples are McCloskey,Binmore,Gintis,Rabin,Foley, and Samuelson)whose scholarly work attempts to integrate new techniques and approaches(for example, evolutionary theory, fractals, chaos theory, catastrophe theory)into the mainstream of standard neoclassical economics.Unfortunately, this is not leading to any significant change in economics. This can easily be confirmed by reading any of the current and new economics textbooks at the undergraduate or graduate level.None of these textbooks integrate any of this new material into the teaching of economics. For example, the Mas-Collel graduate microeconomics textbook makes no attempt to integrate into its chapters on decision making the extremely important work done by Ellsberg on ambiguity.Ambiguity is introduced in an exercise problem and treated as a minor anomaly that has no real theoretical importance.A better title for the book would be "Conversations with Some Cutting Edge Economists".I especially enjoyed reading the interviews conducted by the authors with McCloskey,Foley, and Samuelson. The interview with McCloskey highlights her major point about the misuse of statistical significance levels, this time in regards to mammograms. The interview with Foley touches upon the importance of the work done by Mandelbrot on power law distributions because "...skewed,self-similar,and fat tailed distributions are extremely common in economic data...".Unfortunately,the standard neoclassical approach is to model"...according to a Normal Probability Law."(2004,pp.205-206) .Samuelson's small interview is excellent.Strangely,he has to state again for the nth time that he does not accept Say's law.He even commits a small miscue in bracketing Mandelbrot with Markowitz,Modigliani,Merton,Bachelier,Tobin,Sharpe, and Fama(2004,p.310)as regards modern finance theory. All of these individuals, except Mandelbrot, rely on the normal probability distribution.

I found this book to provide a good insight to Argentina's history and recent economic performance while learning basic economics. Some chapters are a bit dry, but getting to the end is worth it.

This book raises the readers expectations so very much and fails to deliver the basics it promises to do.
Givenn the price of such a book I would have expected to feel confident in devising a communication strategy for my clients. On the contrary all it does is raise questions!
I also found the book extremely un-user friendly and difficult to read,no coulours nor pictural support.

A failed attempt to simplify a complex topic!

          Book Description

In this unique and lively ethnography of women who sell cars, sociologist Helene M. Lawson and the ladies on the lot take readers behind the scenes of one of the last bastions of a predominantly male workplace: the car dealership. Linking the women's own stories within the broader framework of gender and occupation, Lawson presents an engaging and important case study on the impact of gender differences and behavior in the workplace.

5 out of 5 stars Received it yesterday ... More than a quarter read ..........2001-11-11

My dear GOD!! In just the 'few' first pages of the introduction (not the preface), Helene M. Lawson generally covered a vast myriad of problems women face in the business.
The fact that such a book was written to begin with was a total shock to me. It is more than just an overview of America's more detested professions ... It is a portal for others, not involved in the business, to view an everyday 'Lord of the Flies' occurance of imposed, negative psychology placed on women in the business ... Two problems: She puts people into definitive categories - which for the most part - is true. But I have yet to see a 'loose' sales woman to 'sleep with all her clients' ...
Although, I hardly am cynical about her research. Second: She has written this book at a time when Saturn dealerships were espousing the 'one price shopping' program. I guess she couldn't forsee this Saturn program dying. They stopped the 'one price shopping' approx. a year (or less) later, because tire-kickers would 'still' want to haggle on the pricing ...
Either way, anyone who purchases this book, who has never even purchased a vehicle before ... Would find it hard to put down.

5 out of 5 stars What a breath of fresh air!.......2000-06-21

What a breath of fresh air!

I must admit that I had expected this book to be much like the other sociological studies I have read - boring, jargon filled, and unenlightening. This book, however, is a joy to read and opened the door into a world I had never known about.

The use of quotes, the organization of the book, and the gentle guidance of the sociologist/author all combine to make this a rare success in sociological writing.

This book provides insight into the world of car sales and the fascinating experiences of the pioneer women who venture into this exclusive male club. This is NOT a man-bashing tale, but a sensitive account of these women and their struggle for financial success and acceptance.

In the end I found a lot in common with these women. I respect and understand their lives (and those of their male counterparts) in ways I could never have before reading this book.

          Bravo Dr. Lawson!

This book will introduce you to a world where you control your own destiny; a world where you can work when you want to work and not work when you don't want to work; a world where you can "sleep 'til you're done sleeping".

Part One will help you realize that the ideal business is the one that allows you to work at your own pace, your own rhythm and to live your own truth.

Part Two is a fun to read allegory about a fictitious couple named George and Shirley Seeker. You get to follow them as they make the transition from having a job to becoming self-employed entrepreneurs. They meet a man called The Winner, who introduces them to "the Accelerated Game of life". All of a sudden, their own lives begin to blossom as they share their new friend, and their new business, with family and friends.

Part Three offers some powerful insights about Business Ownership and guides you in Starting Your Own Business.

                            Book Description

"Globalization is everyone's business," asserts Kiggundu in this comprehensive examination of globalization's influences on transition economies. Globalization presents challenges to developed and developing countries alike, and these challenges can and must be managed. Countries making the move from state-run to market-driven economies were faced with formidable obstacles even before globalization's effects were fully felt. Kiggundu argues that we, the incipient global society comprised of governments, corporations, NGOs, and individuals, must take a strategic approach to managing globalization. He explores strategies in the fields of public sector reform, governmental use of technology, foreign direct investment and international trade policy, the evolving World Trade Organization, cultures of entrepreneurship, labor standards, and environmental protection. Strategies for managing globalization are not merely to achieve and maintain dominance or competitiveness, but also to integrate the concerns voiced by globalization's harshest critics and most disenfranchised victims: ethics, equity, inclusion, physical and psychological "human security," sustainability, and development. Kiggundu contends that these values, summarized in a 1999 United Nations Development report, should go hand in hand with the mantras we hear from the management literature: profitability and maximizing shareholder value, among other traditional corporate goals. Providing a broad variety of examples, from Chile's management of financial crisis to the vision statements of Botswana and Malaysia, Kiggundu delineates the many ways in which developing countries are successfully managing the vagaries of globalization.

                                    Book Description

Anthony Kronman describes a spiritual crisis affecting the American legal profession, and attributes it to the collapse of what he calls the ideal of the lawyer-statesman: a set of values that prizes good judgment above technical competence and encourages a public-spirited devotion to the law.

For nearly two centuries, Kronman argues, the aspirations of American lawyers were shaped by their allegiance to a distinctive ideal of professional excellence. In the last generation, however, this ideal has failed, undermining the identity of lawyers as a group and making it unclear to those in the profession what it means for them personally to have chosen a life in the law.

A variety of factors have contributed to the declining prestige of prudence and public-spiritedness within the legal profession. Partly, Kronman asserts, it is the result of the triumph, in legal thought, of a counterideal that denigrates the importance of wisdom and character as professional virtues. Partly, it is due to an array of institutional forces, including the explosive growth of the country's leading law firms and the bureaucratization of our courts. The Lost Lawyer examines each of these developments and illuminates their common tendency to compromise the values from which the ideal of the lawyer-statesman draws strength. It is the most important critique of the American legal profession in some time, and an an enduring restatement of its ideals.

                                    3 out of 5 stars A Misfire Worth Reading.......2002-12-20

Charlotte Rampling, beautiful and tear-stained, has a minor breakdown midway through The Verdict--she's fallen for Paul Newman, the lawyer she's been assigned to seduce and spy on by her boss at the big, evil law firm. James Mason, the suave evil boss, consoles her with a drink and an apothegm: "You don't get paid to do your best," Mason says. "You get paid to win." That scene (expertly written by David Mamet) explains the legal profession in America and provides a summary of Kronman's argument. Kronman, the current Dean of Yale Law, bemoans the extinction of lawyers of sound judgment, prudence, and a concern for a range of interests--the client's, the law's, society's, etc. Lawyers who were actively involved with their community and their country, who were looked to as figures of wisdom, not avarice. But Kronman is more diagnostic than prescriptive. He's right--that breed of lawyer has all but vanished. Still, he provides little in the way of practical suggestions for correcting the problem. And his focus is on the profession and the law schools. His focus should be on the free market. Elite American law schools are catering to the needs of the large firms, which are catering to the needs of their corporate clients. To graduate marketable lawyers, the schools have to create skilled technicians. The hiring partner at a Wall Street Firm wants to know that an applicant has the stamina necessary to put in the hours, and the intelligence and tools needed to grind out competent work. No one is interested in his or her views about what might be a more prudent approach to the client's problem; his or her judgment is not only not demanded, it's unwelcome. Kronman's focus is too narrow. The legal profession has become the law business. Because that's what's demanded by clients, who pay the tab. So I think he should have examined the underpinnings of the free market system, which I favor but which is responsible for the shift in legal education and law practice. Also, how does one teach prudence? How does a vocational school--or perhaps any school--instil sound judgment? Furthermore, prudence and judgment are qualities that, like beauty, are in the eye of the beholder. Finally, Kronman's assertion that much of the problem arose when the large Protestant law firms started hiring Jews, African-Americans, women, and associates from the working classes and from second and third-tier schools sounds not only wrong, but bizarrely priggish and elitist in all the wrong ways. Kronman, as far as I can tell, has never practiced law for any length of time, nor has he toiled as a judge. He's spent his career locked in the Ivory Tower of academia, and his book is the high-toned result.

5 out of 5 stars RESCUING THE FADING IDEALS OF ADVOCACY.......2002-10-22

This is a very interesting book by Yale's Law School Dean, Anthony Kronman about law schools, legal teaching, the practice of law, Courts and the governing principles of law firms nowadays in the United States.
The central idea is that the modern American legal profession is in a crisis, a crisis of morale. Disguised by the material rewards of the profession, the downturn has been brought about by the demise of the traditional set of values that until recently played a definitive role in the aspirations of American lawyers. According to the author, previous generations of lawyers conceived their highest aim to be an attainment of practical wisdom about human beings and their affairs- that anyone who wishes to provide effective and real deliberative counsel must possess. This wisdom was perceived as a result acquired only by becoming a person of good judgment, and not merely an expert in technical matters of the law. The cultivation of this character virtue, was an important professional ideal, and contributed fundamentally to the perception that lawyers had about the intrinsic value of their work. And it is this ideal which is now dying in the legal profession. Lawyers find it increasingly difficult to attribute intrinsic fulfillment to their profession. Mainly, as the attention shifts to other means (material, metalegal, etc.) for fulfillment, lawyers cultivate less the traditional values and are ill prepared to provide sound legal and political advise. So, Kronman embarks in a journey to restate the original ideals of what he calls the lawyer-stateman. Therefore, in the first part of the book, he seeks to define and defend more demanding standards of professional excellence. In doing so, he dwells with some complex philosophical issues involved, in simple terms. In the second part we get a more practical and sociological analysis of legal institutions and their cultural dynamics: the current shape of the Courts, legal schools, legal firms, and other institutions involved.
Why should this book be read by all lawyers and students? Because it provides a clear diagnostic of most of the shortcomings of the profession and clues to possible solutions.
Anybody involved in the legal profession as a lawyer, cannot avoid the sensation of looking at a mirror when reading: "The fascination with moneymaking that pervades large-firms practice today tends, in a subtle but significant way, to unsettle the delicate balance between sympathy and detachment in which practical wisdom consists"..."a culturally reinforced preoccupation with money makes it more difficult to sustain the kind of self-forgetfulness required to deliberate for and with another person on his or her behalf"..."this demands that he temporarily suspend his own interests, for only by doing so can he clear an effective space in which his client's interests may be entertained with real feeling".
And in fact, as Kronman states, many modern clients are primarily concerned with making money, and this goal can distort the lawyer's advice by not telling the client that the option that yields the most money, is not the best one overall. The lawyer who is a believer of the money making process and shares his client concern for money, can find it difficult to avoid mistakes in its own deliberations......

This huge book of six hundred pages comes with high recommendations from authors like Gunder Frank and Martin Bernal, but significantly, from no real authority on the Indian Ocean's history. It uses, or claims to use, many languages such as Portuguese, Dutch, Italian, Persian, Russian etc. But it is really based on the Dutch East India Company's sources.
Dealing with the Arabian Seas in the seventeenth century, author Barendse writes in a very poor style. Sometimes, individual sentences dont even make any sense. Whole paragraphs are incoherent. It is Dutch English without a copyeditor. Also, there is no clear thesis. After ploughing through many chapters that cover a lot of ground superficially but with no insights, the reader comes to the conclusion that Barendse diagrees with most people in his field. But why ? Is it just to score a point ? What does he have that is fresh or innovative to the reader of authors like Andre Wink or KN Chaudhuri ? We dont know.
Also, there are many grammatical and spelling errors in the use of European languages which makes one wonder how well he knows them. I cant comment on the Russian or Persian, but here too one can have one's doubts.
Overall, this book cant be used by students. It is also too confusing for the general reader. Will some specialist please tell us whether it is worth something ?

                                        Book Description

Microregionalism and World Order is a pioneering work on the least understood aspect of regionalism. Leading specialists analyze the form microregionalism takes in different parts of the world, including the Americas, Asia Pacific, and Africa. By illustrating the complex relationship among the political, economic, and social dimensions of microregionalism, the book seeks to contribute to the theoretical debate on regionalism as well as to provide new empirical insights.
