    Book Description

Companies in the business of providing knowledge -- for profit -- will dominate the 21st-century global marketplace.

    Can your business compete?

In today's fast-paced world, knowledge is doubling nearly every seven years, while the life cycle of a business grows increasingly shorter. The best way -- and perhaps the only way -- to succeed is to become a "knowledge-based" business. In The Monster Under the Bed, Stan Davis and Jim Botkin show how:

    * Every business can become a knowledge business
    * Every employee can become a knowledge worker
    * Every customer can become a lifelong learner

The Monster Under the Bed explains why it's necessary for businesses to educate employees and consumers. Consider the fact that the vast majority of 60 million PC owners, for example, learned to use their computers not at school but at work or at home. Davis and Botkin explain how any high-tech, low-tech, or no-tech company can discover new markets and create new sources of income by building future business on a knowledge-for-profit basis -- and how, once it does, its competitors must follow or fail.

Filled with examples of high-profile companies that are riding the crest of this powerful wave, The Monster Under the Bed is an insightful exploration of the many ways that the knowledge-for-profit revolution will profoundly affect our businesses, our educational processes, and our everyday lives.

Paolo delivers a no-nonsense, concise guide to great presentations. Many, immediately useful tips on the oral (& aural)--oft neglected--, side of presentations. A must for those who get too heavily involved in theatrics or presentation tools (like Powerpoint, handouts, and so on). Down-to-earth advice for nervous types and know-it-alls, too, based on experience with Xerox, Kodak and oter large corporations/Fortune 500s. He illustrates the productive side of a rhetorician's arsenal. Why then, only 4 stars? The book's sloppy layout isn't doing Paolo any favours. Fortunately, his message is loud and clear. A reliable read.

As a senior college student, I was not doing well on all the interviews that I had, untill I read Jeff Allen's Best: Win the job. After I read this book, my first interview turned out to be great and I was offered a job as a computer programmer. I would advice any one out there looking for a job to put this book in his/her bag and read before your interview.

5 out of 5 stars This is one of the best books of the decade on resumes.......1998-10-16

            Dear Fellow Job Hunters

This is probably the best book of the decade on how to write resumes. All other books just explaine how resumes look like but this book takes you on a step by step approch and doesn't show you but tells you.

If you are a first time job hunter I highly recomend it.

If you are a seasoned pro you should still check it out resumes are changing format because of computers and video recording technology.

What I hate about the book is that the sample resumes take on a problem and solutuion approch. Jeff Allen, gives an example resume and then tells you what is wrong with it.

Jeff Allen forgets that no two resume is the same, becasue no two people have the same experiances, talents, abilities and back grounds to give a universal solution to resume problems.

                  Book Description

This is the shocking story of the collapse of America's seventh largest company. Founded in 1985, Enron soon expanded beyond imagination, venturing into new territories such as internet trading and using state of the art financial and technical solutions.

In the 90s Enron operated the largest eCommerce business in the world. The company's revenues soared. What was $50 billion in revenue in 1999 doubled to $100 billion in 2000. The sky seemed the limit.

Early in 2001 clouds appeared on the horizon. Enron's stock prices eroded from $90 to $40 by the end of July 2001. In mid-August, CEO Skilling resigned suddenly and whistleblower Sheron Watkins informed Kenneth Lay about questionable accounting practices. Stock prices continued to fall.

In October of that year, Enron announced a downward adjustment to its results of $1 billion. Stocks nosedive to $12. In December Enron had to file for bankruptcy as stock prices dropped below one dollar.

An energy giant collapses in the shortest possible time, leaving its employees, shareholders, and creditors out in the cold. Is Enron an incidental case or the tip of an iceberg? Or is it the prelude to a financial meltdown resulting from a combination of wrong American and Japanese economic policies?

                  Customer Reviews:

                  1 out of 5 stars Terrible........2002-07-23

No wonder the author got this book out so soon after Enron's fall. He filled the book with the work of others and then threw in old essays on the failures of capitalism that have no connection to the Enron scandal. Don' waste your money on this book.

2 out of 5 stars The Enron Collapse: Basics for the Beginner.......2002-06-08

After reading this book I was incredibly disappointed .... 1/2 of the book consists solely of excerpts from Enron's year 2000 annual report. The author relies upon the February 2001 report print date as a means to assure his audience that they, the officers and auditors, were lieing through their teeth in the report and isn't it just shocking when you juxtapose that annual report language against the crumbling events of 2001. Throughout all this recopying of text the author doesn't give us anything but the most basic of observations with language fit more for tabloid reporting.

The second half of the book consists primarily of excerpts from the Powers Report and several testimony's before the various congressional financial sub-committee's. Again, little merit in the author's observations regarding the content but lots of tabloid language to thrill us.

Lastly, the book closes with an economic history of capitalism. Filler space, if you will.

If you haven't read an annual report, if you haven't followed this case in any of the major newspapers, if you do not have a business degree and are not actively involved some way in a company's accounting and financing environment then perhaps this book will be of interest. Let me leave you with one positive note: I would recommend this text for advanced high school students who want to study business. Minus the tabloid language, that's the most appropriate marketing avenue for text of this kind.

                          Book Description

Japan's current shift from a manufacturing to a consumer economy is creating unprecedented opportunities for any company with the savvy to exploit this, the world's second largest market. Certainly, as the Japanese economy continues to rebound, more and more companies will continue to stake and build their presence there and use it as a springboard to enter other growing Asian markets. In Leveraging Japan, three leading authorities on market strategy and Japan present the new rules of Japanese marketing and discuss the evolution of other emerging Asian markets. These experts then share the same strategies that they've used to help American Express, Avon, Levi Strauss, and KFC, among other multinational companies, successfully establish a presence in Japan and leverage that presence to enter other Asian markets.

As both a Japanese and an experienced marketer who got the master degree of marketing in the U.S. recently, I do recommend this book for your "must-read." There may have been a lot of books titled such as "Marketing in Japan," and they might have taught you "Bow each other and give your name card when you see Japanese business person at the first time." It's really awkward for Japanese. And I had been very curious why foreign marketers have repeated to fail in Japan's market and why they have misunderstood or overlooked Japan's culture, infrastructure, and fundamentals as a lucrative consumer market. The book will show you the change of Japan as the most important market and the portal to Asia into new era, but will tell you the principle of multicultural marketing that has not changed, as well. The reliable statistics and tips/topics in the book are absolutely terrific to depict the real Japan. It must be helpful for you to know and success in the market.

For 15 years now I have consulted for US companies planning to enter the Japanese market. It has been some time since I read a book this up to date, this exciting, this accessible on the subject of entering the Japanese market in the English language. The main shortcomig of the book is its misleading title: the book is really about the changes in the Japanese market due to the changing consumer demographics and attitudes, regulatory restructuring, and the ongoing revolution in distribution systems; about the recent experiences of US entrants (1994-98) into the market; and the reasons why some succeeded while others failed. The books makes three exellent points: that the Japanese market place is changing dramatically; that foreign companies with the commitment and the resources to enter the market directly can and do make lots of money in Japan almost immediately; and that Japan offers much better profit and growh prospects to American companies than the ephemeral but fashionable emerging markets of SE Asia. The book presents issues of doing business in Japan from the point of view of large, determined, well capitalized companies entering the market through their own directly owned subsidiaries and makes the point that this may be the only fool-proof method to do well in that market. It isnt cheap, but worth its price as a guide and a reference book.

This book details the atmosphere in Japan since the Asian Crash. It contains the most current information (released 1/04/00) on Japanese market conditions. This information has assisted me both in understanding my multinational clients' needs as well as directed me toward the legal advice I need to advocate in entering this market.

There is a substantial body of literature dealing with the Occupation of Japan and Japan's surge forward since; yet hardly anyone has addressed the significance of the enormous contributions in science and technology towards the realization of Japan's "Economic Miracle." In particular, nothing prior to this book has dealt with the significant work of the Occupation's Scientific and Technical Division. That Division was enormously important in bringing the Japanese scientists and engineers back into the mainstream of world S&T immediately after the end of WWII. The Division persuaded the Japanese Government to create new and more efficient methods of dealting with technological matters (including industrial standards, quality control, patents and other intellectual property); it managed the sending abroad of scientists and engineers to "catch up with" what was happening elsewhere; it sought and obtained support (from U.S. funds) to bring needed literature and laboratory equipment to Japan; and in many other ways helped put Japan's large body of scientists and engineers back in touch with world S&T. Those wishing to underestand fully the processes by which Japan has developed its current industrial strength with such unprecedented speed will find in this book much that is new and significant.

                                                  Book Description

The Marketing Science Institute (MSI) has a 38-year history of funding high-profile scholarly research on topics that have managerial significance. MSI’s pioneering work on “developing a market orientation,” heretofore only available as a series of working papers, is presented in book form for the first time by Sage Publications, Inc. Market orientation is best defined as an organization-level culture, a set of shared values and beliefs about putting the customer first in business planning. This book demonstrates the importance of market orientation on organizational culture (the shared set of values for putting customers first), on strategy (the creation of superior value for a firm’s customers), and on tactics (the set of cross-functional activities directed at creating and satisfying customers). An illustrious group of authors under the leadership of MSI Executive Director Rohit Deshpandé, (Harvard Business School), has collaborated on this unique and timely book. The wisdom of Developing a Market Orientation should be experienced by all business leaders, scholars, and students.

                                                    Book Description

This case study focuses on and analyses the formation of four co-operatives in the Evangeline region, a small Acadian community in the southwest part of Prince Edward Island.

Defined by the authors as an 'integrated community-controlled economy,' the Evangeline community demonstrates the potential that a network of interrelated co-operatives has for community economic development. More specifically, the authors discuss why some co-operatives succeed while others fail, and propose a model that outlines the element necessary for any comprehensive community economic-development process.

Wilkinson and Quarter look at the Evangeline experiment in the context of two seemingly contradictory trends today: globalization and decentralization. They argue that the initiatives undertaken by the Evangeline community fit within the trend toward decentralization and community control. The citizens of the Evangeline region have formed a community-controlled economy, refusing to accept the conventional wisdom that a small community is not viable in a modern economy. The authors suggest that the Evangeline experiment shows that communities which are being marginalized in the modern world can take matters into their own hands and succeed where externally driven development has failed.
