This book explains why states intervene and (or) retaliate in some high technology industries, but not in others, and how these commercial rivalries are likely to unfold. Dr. Busch argues that states subsidize national champions in industries promising externalities for domestic industries, spend more on subsidies where these benefits do not escape national borders, and are more likely to bring these commercial rivalries back from the brink of a trade war where these subsidies leave both states worse off.

A tour de force, truly innovative........1999-10-27

This book is just tremendous. Why do states promote "national champion" industries in some cases but not in others? When do such subsidies result in costly trade wars? Economists in the 1980s made their name with the heretical argument that intervening on behalf of key industries could be beneficial (with caveats). Busch takes the necessary extra step, explaining the political reasons why leaders have taken this economic advice to heart sometimes too closely and other times not closely enough. Along the way he debunks the common view that trade policy is purely the product of industry porkbarreling, and he introduces surprising evidence about cases government "should" have intervened more but didn't. If you are going to read just one thing about how states can promote competitiveness in the global high-tech economy, here is the book for you.

I bought this book several years ago before I knew what type of business I was going to be in. I've now owned a retail store (paint your own pottery) for more than 4 years and looking at this book now, it does have a lot of good information for anyone looking to start and run a retail business with a service aspect. The chapters on business planning, setting up your business, insurance, securing a site, getting to opening, staffing and the last 4-5 chapters on operations all are well-written and applicable to many forms of retail.

As a designer, I was looking more for input on equipment layout and functionality. This book gave me a good equipment list to discuss and layout with the client. The local building department loved our plans! The one area where the book falls short is helping to illustrate some good layouts.

This book is truly a story and not information on how to sell. It was enjoyable to read.A true success story of an insurance agent,but no teaching on how to become better or be more productive in selling. I believe it is more of a forum for this person to promote racial equality than selling of insurance products. Racism is disgusting at any level and to me stupid to think the color of skin has anything to do with ones ability. Yet this book was purchased thinking it would help me to sell better and that was not the case.Great to read,not helpful for improving sales performance.
